learning design days 31 October 2007

October's Design Day was built around Design Mart, an exhibition about eight designers and makers who are unusually innovative, prepared to try apparently strange ideas.
Six schools came together, led by Gareth Richards, Head of Technology at Kesteven and Sleaford High School.
For the morning the schools worked together, moving through a series of skills workshops.
Later, each school formed itself into a design company to explore, innovative and collaboratively work towards a new product. Just a few drawings can be seen at 1. Click on the roll drawings at 2 to see two approaches in more detail.
During the afternoon the ideas were worked up into models and a presentation to the whole group, a nervy time but consumately well done.
Amongst the ideas at 3:
Possibly the best of the day, Amanda Swartz and students from Spalding High invented a wall hanging that folds to become a bag:
The Ladybag begins as a functional wallhanging with pockets for every item that you willneed for your time at university. Space for your clothes, mobile phone, laptop, make up and accessories that can be displayed on the wall of your room. Once on the move the Ladybag folds effortlessly into a fashionable hold all.
Arthur Mellows Village College took a workman like look at chair design with a simple wrought and potentially very effective chair with storage.
Lisa Durkin and students from Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School took inspiration from the Jabba hut shown on the front of the last Hub magazine to create a sculptural jewellery stand.
Ideas couldn't get any simpler but brilliant than proposed by Phil Cavanagh and students' folding chair, sold to the Design Day delegates with gutsy drawings.
Steve Turner and students from Branston Community College turned that ubiquitous device, the loo roll holder into an object of great humour. Enough of wood or dull stainless steel constructions screwed to the wall. Branston's soft strawberry flies from the ceiling, making drawing the paper out far more fun.
