The migration of stitches with Anne Morrell
Professor Anne Morrell has been a key figure in the development of embroidery and textiles education for many years. She worked at Goldsmiths College and then Manchester Metropolitan University through periods of key growth from the 1960s when embroidery and associated disciplines moved from being the domain of the passive artisan to a proactive, dynamic discipline that has been influential in crafts, design and art.
Through the years Anne has maintained her own practice as a textiles artist, showing work in many countries. She combines this with a continuing intellectual and practical curiousity about the provenance and development of embroidery over the centuries, noting the way in which stitching techniques are closely linked with cultural change, migration and other social shifts across continents. It’s her belief that there is a trail to be uncovered, the first step of which is to understand the form of stitching techniques and to provide a classification that avoids the cross cultural problems of language.
June’s highly focused workshop will be of great interest to all involved in textiles. Professor Morrell will take students through a story of stitching showing how subtle changes in technique have altered approaches to making disciplines. It will be a practical seminar where students will use needle and thread to understand the detail.
The course will be of substantial interest to textiles practitioners, historians, geographers and others interested in cultural change.

Natural fibre felt making with Laura Mabbutt
Felt making is a popular craft, based on simple techniques. The aesthetic strength of the material relies on careful application of colour and texture.
Laura Mabbutt’s work strips felt making back to its bare essentials, using natural materials and natural dyes. The outcomes are works with great simplicity and gentle presence.
Laura’s workshop will cover the processing of the fibre and building of forms. Although very much concerned with vessel building there will be a look at jewellery making.
